Gosport 100 - Celebrating 100 years of the Borough of Gosport. A hundred years ago, in November 1922, Gosport officially became a Borough, after King George V approved the grant of a municipal charter. This gave the town a special formal status. This special, extraordinary Council meeting has been called to celebrate the 100th Anniversary and allow Councillors past and present to share memories and experiences.
Minutes: Honoroary Freeman, Honorary Alderman, Councillors and former Councillors were invited to address the Council.
They spoke of their memories of the time on the Council, Gosport as a Borough, and reflected on the Borough.
Members paid tribute to the work of all Councillors, past and present, reflected on changes in the Borough, how Council meetings had changed and evolved and shared memories of those Councillors no longer with us.
Tribute was paid to all of those that made the Borough what it was, the volunteers, the Council officers, and reflected on significant memories such as the Falklands War and the campaign to save Haslar Hospital.
There was a reflection on the composition of the Council, how it had changed in 100 years and those that had been Mayor reflected on the honour that had given them.
Tribute was paid to the twinning with Royan and presence of the Military in the Borough.
It was reflected that Gosport 100 was an occasion to celebrate and that the meeting had been a nice way to do so.
