Live Monitoring of Public Space CCTV

We the undersigned petition the council to Re-instate "Live" Monitoring of CCTV in all public open spaces in Gosport.

We women are half the population of Gosport. We are mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, colleagues and partners. Our safety, security, and prosperity are everyone’s businesses.  Still, in the 21st Century, some crimes disproportionately affect women and girls.  All society must ensure women & girls feel safe going about their lives.
Four out of five women feel unsafe walking alone after dark in a park or other open public space*. One in two women feel unsafe walking alone in a busy public place*. Disabled people feel less safe walking alone in all settings than non-disabled people*.
*Perceptions of personal safety and experiences of harassment, Great Britain: Office for National Statistics
This petition is focused on helping create a public environment where women & girls of Gosport feel safe.
CCTV is shown to be most effective in reducing crime when actively monitored. The national strategy for reducing Violence against Women & Girls identified CCTV & Streetlighting as important environmental factors that help women & girls feel safe.
Cancelling CCTV monitoring without public consultation is an abuse of power by Gosport Borough Council. Only women & girls understand what it feels like to be a woman walking alone in the dark in Gosport.
This petition asks that CCTV live monitoring be reinstated in Gosport at the earliest opportunity to ensure your mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, colleagues, and partners feel safe in their hometown.
